Ad Blocking Reaches New High Among Other Shocking Stats

Marketing Week shed light on five interesting statistics relevant to marketers, with the most shocking being the spike in ad blocking. Of the 4.1 billion people using the Internet last quarter, 18.5% enabled advertisement blockers. This breaks down as 236 million people blocking ads on their desktop and 527 people blocking ads on their mobile device. Advertisement blocking on mobile devices is up 70.5% since the beginning of 2017. Other interesting statistics reported include:

·         Instagram overtaking Facebook. Quarter 4 reflected that Instagram’s brand audience surpassed Facebook’s by 570 million impressions.

·         Chief Experience and Chief Customer Officers more prevalent. Only 11% of companies report not having a chief experience officer and only 10% report not having a chief customer officer.

·         Companies resorting to cliché methods of discussing diversity and inclusion. Out of 89% of companies actively discussing diversity and inclusion, 47% are communicating diversity solely by posting stock images of multiracial offices around the workplace.

·         Retail sales experiencing a stuttering start this year. Compared to growth rates experienced in January 2019, January 2020 sales brings 12-month average to a record low. (Marketing Week, 02.17.20)
